New minimum standards under the Residential Tenancies Regulations 2021, effective 29 March 2021, will require:
1. all external entry doors must have at least a functioning single action deadlock; and
2. all external windows capable of opening have functioning latches to secure against external entry (lock or bolt)
3. a free set of keys or another security device must be provided to each renter who signed the rental agreement.
Apartment doors will have to meet additional compliance under The Building Act 1993, Building Regulations 2006 and Building Code of Australia which requires hardware to be fire-rated, all fire doors must be self-closing and self-latching otherwise the door may be rendered non-compliant and may have to be replaced.
